FREE Course: (A MUST Read) The Battlefield is Everywhere by Kevin Wikse

"There is no place for a warrior outside of war," my mentor once told me. He wasn't trying to instill despair; he was revealing a fundamental truth. Conflict, predation, and survival—these are the default states of the universe. And for a warrior, that means there is no place where they do not belong. Everything around us is consciousness, but more importantly, it is awareness. Without awareness, you’ve already lost the battle—your personal power is now in the hands of another, claimed by forces you didn’t even see coming. Understanding who or what claims that power is part of the warrior’s journey.

A warrior must know their enemy, and a hunter must know their prey. They are one and the same, as all warriors are hunters by nature, driven to stalk, seek, and survive. This isn’t philosophical; it’s primal. All life, at every level—from the subatomic to the vast ecosystems we inhabit—follows the same brutal rule: eat or be eaten. My mentor would have me lay face-first in the dirt, eyes fixed on the micro-world beneath my feet. Hours would pass as I observed the epic battles of lizards, ants, spiders, and beetles, waging wars that most people never see because they never think to look.

The truth is, we humans are no different. Sure, we believe ourselves to be above such primal forces. We pretend civility separates us from the blood-soaked ground we walk on, that our capacity for benevolence lifts us out of the natural order. And yes, kindness and compassion are virtues we should foster. But it’s folly to think the thin veneer of civilization has erased the primal truth: we still live in a world of conflict, even if the battleground has shifted. Physical violence may not be our daily reality, but the warfare of power, influence, and survival continues beneath the surface.

The rules haven’t changed. The battlefield is now one of subtler conflicts—social maneuvers, covert engagements, psychological warfare. Civility isn’t peace; it’s simply a different kind of battleground. And to survive as a warrior in this world, you must learn to navigate it with awareness, reclaiming your own power or, when necessary, taking another’s. The essence of the warrior hasn’t changed—it’s just evolved.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that it’s exceptionally dangerous to be on a battlefield without awareness—to be completely ignorant of your surroundings, blind to the fact that you’re in a war zone at all. And yet, this is the default state for those who are not warriors. The battleground for personal power isn’t just in front of your eyes—it’s behind your eyelids too. The war doesn’t pause when you sleep.

If we were to measure when a person is most unaware of the world around them, it would be when they are asleep. It's during these hours, when we’re most vulnerable, that the real battle intensifies. And this is precisely why the warriors in my mentor's lineage took on the monumental task of developing awareness not just in the waking world, but in the realm of dreams. They understood that the battle for power continues beyond the physical plane, and that to be defenseless in the dream world is to be defenseless in life.

Weaponizing lucidity—turning the state of being aware while dreaming into a tool for survival and growth—became a crucial skill. Dreaming wasn’t just rest; it was another front in the war for personal power. A warrior doesn’t just fight on the material plane, they must learn to confront the forces in their subconscious, where the lines between reality and illusion blur. In that space, they cultivate the ability to gain control, to navigate the unknown, and to ensure that even in their most vulnerable state, they are never truly unaware.

For a warrior, there is no distinction between waking life and the dreamscape. Both are arenas where power is gained or lost, where awareness is either sharpened or dulled. Sleep may seem like a retreat, but for a warrior, it’s just another battlefield—one that demands mastery and vigilance.
